Why building a business around meaning changes everything.
When I first started my business, it wasn’t for profit. It was for survival. After multiple diagnoses, including MS, cancer, and chronic illness, I was told I’d never work again. But deep down, I knew I still had value to give, stories to share, and lives to impact.
What began as one small step forward has grown into multiple businesses under the Justine Martin Corporation. But they all have one thing in common: purpose.
What Is Purpose Driven Entrepreneurship?
Purpose driven entrepreneurship means building your business around more than just money. It means asking:
What change do I want to see in the world?
Whose life will be better because of this work?
How can I align my business with my values?
When you run a business rooted in purpose, success looks different. It’s not just numbers on a spreadsheet, it’s impact in the lives of others.
Why Purpose Is Powerful
Here’s what I’ve learnt from running purpose led businesses:
1. Purpose gives you staying power
Running a business is hard. Life throws curveballs. But when your mission matters deeply, you’ll always find a reason to keep going.
2. Purpose attracts your people
Customers, clients, collaborators, they’re drawn to authenticity. When they know why you do what you do, they want to be part of it.
3. Purpose fuels resilience
When setbacks come (and they will), a clear “why” anchors you. It reminds you that every challenge is part of a bigger mission.
My Purpose in Action
Every business I run is linked to something I’ve personally overcome:
Morpheus Publishing helps others share their lived experience through books.
Resilience Mindset helps people turn their pain into power.
JUZT Art offers expression and connection for people with disabilities.
Geelong Residential Cleaners and Garden Maintenance gives meaningful work opportunities.
Justine Martin Speaker exists to inspire others through raw, real storytelling.
Each business was born out of adversity, but powered by purpose.
Purpose Evolves, But Never Disappears
You don’t need to have your whole “mission statement” figured out on day one. Sometimes your purpose grows as you do. Sometimes it changes.
But if you keep asking, “How can I serve?” and “What matters most?”, you’ll always stay aligned.
Final Thoughts: Build What Matters
If you’re just starting out, or if you’ve been in business for years, ask yourself:
What do I stand for?
Who do I want to help?
What legacy am I building?
Because when your business is built on purpose, you’re not just earning a living. You’re changing lives. Starting with your own.
