How I Turned Adversity Into Opportunity

Because sometimes life doesn’t give you a choice, but you get to choose what you do with it.
People often see the awards, the businesses, the books, and the art. What they don’t always see is what came before it all: The diagnoses. The fear. The days I couldn’t get out of bed. The times I was told I’d never work again.
But I’m here to tell you—adversity didn’t end my story. It reshaped it. And I used it to build a life far greater than I could’ve imagined.
Here’s how I turned pain into purpose and adversity into opportunity.
1. I Stopped Waiting for “Normal” to Return
When I was diagnosed with MS and later with cancer, I kept waiting for life to go back to normal. Spoiler alert: it didn’t.
Eventually, I realised that the old version of me, the one who climbed the corporate ladder, was gone. But that didn’t mean I was gone. I still had a voice. A mind. A heart. A story.
So I stopped looking backwards and asked: “What can I create from here?”
2. I Gave Myself Permission to Do Things Differently
My health forced me to slow down, but it also gave me time to reflect. I rediscovered my love of art. I began to write. I explored business ideas I’d once shelved. I stopped trying to fit into the world as it was and started building one that fit me.
Disability didn’t shrink my ambition. It made me more creative with how I pursued it.
3. I Shared My Story Even When It Was Scary
The first time I stood on stage and shared my journey, I was shaking. But as I spoke, I saw heads nodding. I saw tears. I saw a connection.
I realised my story wasn’t just mine. It was a mirror for others. And in sharing it, I wasn’t just healing myself, I was giving others hope.
That’s the power of authenticity. That’s the foundation of Justine Martin Speaker.
4. I Built Businesses That Help Others Rise
Each business I’ve created—from Morpheus Publishing to Resilience Mindset, JUZT Art, and beyond—was born from adversity.
They weren’t just survival plans. They were impact vehicles. They gave me purpose and gave others tools, platforms, and encouragement to step into their own power.
Because when you’ve rebuilt yourself from the ground up, you build things that matter.
Final Thoughts: Adversity Will Change You. Let It Make You Stronger
You don’t need to wait until things are perfect to begin. You don’t have to pretend you’re not scared. You just need to take the first step.
Adversity cracked me open. But through those cracks, light poured in. And I used that light to create art, build businesses, write books, speak on stages, and help others believe they can too.
